Micron Predicts DRAM Crisis Until At Least 2028

It's no secret that the DRAM crisis is predicted to go on for a while, with everyone from Korean news outlets to, more recently, OEMs like Lenovo, predicting that massive price hikes are slated to be the norm in PC hardware for the foreseeable future, thanks to AI data center demand. Following the recent Micron Q3 financial report, in which the DRAM maker revealed record results for the quarter, Micron's CEO, Sanjay Mehrotra, commented on the current DRAM situation, stating to investors that "Our customers are recognizing that supply shortages in memory and storage will take considerable time to improve." He continued, saying that "Even as we expect industry supply to improve gradually in 2028, we currently do not have a line of sight as to when memory supply will be able to catch up with increasing demand." Earlier in 2027, Micron announced a number of new initiatives to increase DRAM supply to meet current demand, including a new megafab in New York, which it expects to complete by early 2029, and intentions to buy a fab from PSMC in a $1.8 billion deal that would see meaningful DRAM output by late 2027. While the shortage is expected to ease somewhat, it's entirely likely that prices will remain elevated for a while to come, which will likely affect the upcoming Xbox Helix console, PS6 and PS6 Portable, and the already announced Steam Machine—which Valve expects will continue to be overpriced—for a while.

A lot of new "unforeseen issues and market conditions" can/will occur until 2028...

Correct title should be "Micron decides to continue DRAM Crisis Until At Least 2028"

What a time to be alive. And I made a "good" deal with my friend as he sells me 16G DDR4 for 100EUR.....

Right on cue everyone has been covering Micron:

We already are heading for a disaster in coming months with regards to failed crops and food shortages. Tech and other luxury items will be last thing on minds of masses around the world.

#5

Oh yeah, okay. All the tech companies around the world got "their" money from chips act and similar funding from tax dollars, i.e. from my taxes, and then they decided to rip off consumers in a few more ways.

#6

But LLMs are not likely to replicate the near monopolies that have made the market power of current tech giants hard to assail. A better analogy for them might be airlines, which are hobbled by small margins, intense competition, high expenses and dependence on hardware created by outside vendors. We could wind up with a lot more data centres than we need.

Ruruas he sells me 16G DDR4 for 100EUR.....

A friend's price? Wait a minute... Just before the supposed AI crisis and the even more supposed RAM shortage, I paid almost €100 for 32 GB. DDR5! Regards, Fred.

DDR4 is not that affected.

BorisDGDDR4 is not that affected.

It has been steadily increasing in price, though. DDR3 seems mostly safe, minor bumps - the first contract price increase for DDR2 was just spotted, though... RAM is the new gold

2030 minimum, except AI bubble bursts. In case you say "The Chinese are coming!", they are not stupid, they will not sell cheap. Not to mention that probably much of the Chinese RAM will also be going into Chinese Supercomputers, AI factories and consumers.

....I thought too. Now 16GB sells new 200EUR, more than I paid my 32GB of 5 years ago.

Before this he'd sold those for 20EUR at maximum :D

More corruption from Micron investors.micron.com/news-releases/news-release-details/micron-and-anthropic-announce-strategic-agreement-scale-next Supply Agreement Building on the technical collaboration, Micron and Anthropic have entered into a memory and storage supply agreement spanning Micron's industry-leading data center portfolio. This positions Micron to support Anthropic’s multi-year growth trajectory as the frontier AI lab scales its compute strategy for the long term Of course Anthropic with their amazing profits will be buying lots of ram and ssds from micron to put in their data centres which they clearly have but as they making so much money, they are leasing cloud platforms to share their massive wealth and grow America's economy, which is why they are giving xai 1.25 billion dollars a month to rent a data centre

I'm not a lawyer. And this is my only opinion. But the worst in this situation, is not only the obvious collusion, and price fixing, and the prices itself. But the fact, that these DRAM corpos syphoning all the money possible, not only from the direct DRAM sales, and the retail DYI sales, but by getting tax brakes and state funding, by billions, which are insanely more, than the tiny DYI market gives. Tax brakes and funding, which the tax payers themselves would never been able to get. And they are done without concent, by the "representatives" which never been elected for. So if something is done without concent it's basically robbery. These corpos basically nulllify the public contracts between citizens and their local/state representatives, as theose reps do no longer represent the citizen, but the financiel entities, at the expence of taxpayers. People are taken hostages, and are coerced to fund these companies, against their will. Now how this is called legally, again? And for what? The proprietary models, which run on ungodly expensive hardware, which consumes countries wrth of electricity, and the flood-level of water, and at the same time being outpaced byt the open free models by the fraction of resources spent, on the other hand. How is this not a collusion and unlawful? They are stealing on all fronts. And doing it without any cosequences. In a normal countries, the regulation bodies, would have busted this behaviour, when the DRAM passed \~200-250% price hike. And the cartel would be fined for the damage. This should have never happened. Alas. Thiss is just madness, a lunacy of higest grade.

BorisDGDDR4 is not that affected.

What are you talking about. Last late summer/early autumn, the ram was bought for \~$17 per 8GB DDR4 2666 stick. By the December, it was around $70, for the very same stick. The DDR4 costs almost as much as DDR5. And that's lunacy. The predators profit from demand, like there's no tomorow.

Exactly. There is no prediction when you're one of the major controlling factors in the situation.

It's all engineered anyway. Like what did Ursula expect from the construction of AI datacenters, global warming to decrease??? WW3 can proceed for all I care, the ICBMs won't be targeting my house, but those datacenters instead. The end goal is not that I win but that ferret face & friends lose. Of course Micron going bankrupt or at least ending up in shambles at the end of this AI bubble would be absolutely glorious and most deserved. Being on their last breath and then begging gamers to save them only to get kicked in the teeth and left to agonize in the gutter. Sign me up!

Hahahaha Reminds me of XFX back of their Novideo days, "GTX blablabla XXX XTX XTE etc edition" or something. It was semicommon joke that the more Xes, the better :D Hope their marketer have many keyboards since no sane person uses the X key as much. edit: Though I like the Radeon XFX era, no complaints :)

#18

They're probably right, largely because most of the DRAM that's being used in the ML investment bubble won't be able to re-used for anything else. It's all attached to other devices, you can't just take it out. Hundreds of billions or even trillions of hardware will end up as e-waste / or even in landfill failing that. It could be 2030 before we see any technical progress that actually benefits consumers, or even longer than that.

#19

I mean... why would Micron or any other company making shedloads of money off this "crisis" be interested in ending it any sooner than they have to. I wonder what my 96 GB (2x 48 GB) v-color ECC DDR5 6400 MT/s memory is worth these days. Paid $500 a year ago. They haven't been in stock for more than half a year by now. Actually, most if not all of their ECC UDIMMs are unavailable, which means they list the price at $0. The one I \could\ see a price for is the 2x 32 GB kit at $1500.

#20

Dr. DroA lot of new "unforeseen issues and market conditions" can/will occur until 2028...

Yes, it seems there is always a new convenient excuse now to overprice anything and everything. Gullible people panic and buy, most likely with money they don't have; instead of just not buying anything. It's actually supposed to be the other way around, where they panic and sweat to get your cash. But, alas, people decided to have no impulse control and buy things regardless of market conditions, which has led to this. Again, <need> over >want<

#21

Micron has no reason to bring prices back down to normal when they're making record profits from this artificial shortage, and I doubt things will improve by 2028, unless the AI bubble pops. Regulations for collusion and price fixing needs to happen, especially since Micron took taxpayer funding then dropped out of the consumer market.

#22

BorisDGDDR4 is not that affected.

I respectfully disagree... pcpartpicker.com/trends/price/memory/

Anthropic and Open AI don't own any servers and data centres so where is all the ram and ssds they are buying? Could it be that they are still in possession of the dram cartel and it was all paper transactions? Was it even manufactured? Shows how bad this corruption is when these companies aren't being investigated by officials

#24

Oh no, a company that’s raking in record profits from a massive, well-organized scam says the scam is going to continue. You don’t say.

Could be that most of it is just planned out and not manufactured yet, since Open AI only gave a letter of intent to buy memory. Also given that 50% of datacenters were cancelled or not finished it does bring to question where all of the ram and SSD's are going if Micron and others are making it, or maybe they're just stockpiling wafers.
