When even Apple can’t keep up with the flood of AI-discovered security holes, you must begin to wonder whether AI is a blessing or a curse.

Me oh my, the Financial Times reports that Apple started capping security bug submissions in June. Why? Because security researchers using AI tools have been flooding its security teams with a mix of real vulnerabilities and low-quality, even hallucinated, reports.

Low-quality AI bug reports have long been a problem. However, what makes this a bit curious is that lately, most software maintainers have been saying that the quality of bug reports has gotten much better. As Greg Kroah-Hartman, the stable Linux kernel maintainer, told me in February 2026, “the world switched. Now we have real reports.” It’s not just Linux, he continued. “All open-source projects have real reports that are made with AI, but they’re good, and they’re real.”

So, what’s different about Apple? Well, it’s not that its source code is closed. That, as Microsoft Azure CTO Mark Russinovich recently pointed out, no longer matters. Binary files can also be cracked by AI tools to find exploitable bugs.

No, Apple’s problem is self-inflicted. Since last October, Apple has offered payouts of over $5 million for a single security hole. Now, obviously it has to be one heck of a vulnerability, but for a potential payout of 5 million bucks, who wouldn’t sic an LLM on Apple’s code and hope for the best?

Thus, Apple is facing a tidal wave of bug reports. Even with AI helping triage the bugs, Apple’s security team still has to verify every last lousy submission manually. Sure, the AI reports are polished and look good, but AI always sounds good even when it’s making up slop. In this case, many reports are either speculative or false, so the review load rises even when the number of real bugs does not.

You can’t dismiss all speculative reports. As Ben Hawkes, a computer security expert and former manager of Google’s Project Zero, noted, “It’s hard to capture the fact that a bug can be super serious in one type of deployment, somewhat important in another, or no big deal at all — and that the bug can be all of this at the same time. Vulnerability remediation is hard.” Exactly so.

Apple’s answer has been to put a hard limit on how many bug reports it will accept each month from researchers. If you submit good bugs, Apple will accept more from you. You can also ask to be allowed to submit more reports.

If Apple — with a market cap of over $4 trillion! — is having to restrict how many bug reports it can deal with, how can other companies hope to keep up? That’s a darn good question, and I fear the answer is, “They can’t.”

Brace yourself, folks. Until AI can fix problems as fast as it can find them, we’re in for a really rough security ride.
