steppewm

steppewm

minimal stacking wayland compositor, using wlroots

if you want windows that float and overlap, with titlebars and a taskbar like IceWM, there is not much to pick from.

that's steppewm. stacking, small and themeable

features

  • stacking window management, snapping, workspaces
  • taskbar and alt-tab switcher
  • 25 classic icewm pixmap themes included
  • osd for volume, brightness and keyboard layout
  • layer shell, session lock, multi-monitor
  • system tray
  • xwayland via xwayland-satellite (optional)
  • lua configuration
  • themes

themes are pixmap based. the ones it ships with were converted from icewm, so if you already have a collection, one command brings it across:

    tools/icewm2steppewm.py --all

the referencecovers the theme format and the converter's other options.

    install

    arch, from the aur:

git clone https://aur.archlinux.org/steppewm-git.git cd steppewm-git makepkg -si

elsewhere, build it. wlroots 0.18, 0.19 and 0.20 all work, so whichever your distribution ships should be fine:

git clone https://github.com/uncognic/steppewm cd steppewm make configure make build sudo make install

you will need meson, ninja, wayland, wlroots, xkbcommon, libinput, lua 5.4, pixman and cairo. libpulse, sdbus-c++ and librsvg are optional, and enable the volume osd, the tray and svg icons respectively.

    configuration

one lua file, at \~/.config/steppewm/config.lua. see the example for what is available.
