Walmart is finally adding Tap to Pay at its US stores, giving shoppers the ability to make contactless payments after years of requests for the feature.
The retail giant has long been a notable holdout when it comes to contactless payments, instead offering options including traditional credit and debit cards and its own Walmart Pay system through the Walmart app.
That is now changing, with Walmart confirming Tap to Pay will begin rolling out at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on August 24. The company plans to bring the payment option to all US Walmart stores and Sam’s Club locations by the end of 2026.

Once enabled, shoppers will be able to use eligible contactless cards, phones and smartwatches to pay at checkout.
Customers will also be able to add eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards to supported digital wallets, allowing them to use those cards for contactless payments.
Walmart said the rollout is designed to give shoppers more choice over how they pay, while keeping its existing payment methods available.

“Tap to Pay is a great addition to the other payment options already offered like cash, credit card or Walmart Pay,” the company said.
Walmart Pay will continue to allow customers to pay through the Walmart app while accessing purchases, receipts and Walmart+ fuel savings. Sam’s Club members can also continue using Scan & Go to scan items and pay through the app without going through a traditional checkout line.
Tap to Pay will initially be limited to select stores and clubs before expanding nationwide. Walmart says all US Walmart and Sam’s Club locations are expected to support the feature by the end of 2026.

Walmart has also been experimenting with bigger changes inside its stores.
