Key Takeaways

  • MongoDB shares fell about 24% premarket after CEO CJ Desai resigned, effective immediately, to take a senior role at Meta Platforms.
  • The exit says more about how hard Meta is pushing to win in AI than about any problem at MongoDB.
  • Former CEO Dev Ittycheria is back as interim CEO, and the company reaffirmed its Q3 and full-year guidance.
  • Tuesday’s Investor Day is the next test, and the main risk is a long search after two CEO changes in under a year.
  • MongoDB (MDB) shares sank 15% Monday after CEO CJ Desai resigned to take a senior role at Meta Platforms (META).

The kicker? He’s leaving “effective immediately”…the morning before MongoDB’s Investor Day.

    What exactly happened

  • Desai is out as president and CEO after less than a year in the job (he started November 10, 2025).
  • Dev Ittycheria, who ran MongoDB from 2014 to 2025, is back as interim CEO.
  • The board has hired an executive search firm to find a permanent replacement.
  • MongoDB reaffirmed the Q3 and full-year fiscal 2027 guidance it gave on September 1

The company’s 8-K is careful to note the exit is “not due to any disagreement with the Company.”

Which means…

The real story is Meta

Here’s the thing: I think this says more about Meta than it does about MongoDB.

I wrote last week that Muse, Meta’s new AI agent, is really an ad platform in the making. Building that takes serious infrastructure muscle, and that’s Desai’s whole résumé: cloud infrastructure, enterprise software, AI, and large-scale SaaS, per MongoDB’s own announcement when it hired him.

Meta hasn’t said what his new role is. My prediction: CEO of Muse or of some larger division that includes Muse.

Meta just talked the sitting CEO of a public software company into leaving with no notice. What else in Meta’s portfolio would be so interesting that he’d jump ship?

And let’s face it – what else in Meta’s portfolio is worth resourcing that heavily?

What’s next

Tomorrow’s Investor Day now gets presented under an interim CEO, and investors will want to hear that the strategy isn’t walking out the door with Desai.

Of course, two CEO changes in under a year isn’t nothing, and a CEO search can drag on.

And that’s against the backdrop of slowing revenue growth…with gross margins mostly holding the line.

Doesn’t look like a company in serious trouble to me.

My view: this is a win for Meta and an awkward day for MongoDB. With guidance reaffirmed and Dev back in the chair, I’d wait for tomorrow before reading too much into the drop.

So what’s MongoDB worth?
