QUIET — a scripted interaction prototypeAfter “The Next Human–Computer Interface”, R. Leone

Help that waits until you need it.

§1Premise

Most AI still answers in paragraphs, in a window of its own. QUIET lives inside the interface you are already using: it stays silent while you work, notices when you hesitate, and answers by pointing, drawing or doing — then steps aside.

§2Live demonstration

Hesitate, and see what it does.

Nothing is pre-recorded: it reacts live to what you do. Four situations taken from the thesis, each answered in a different form — a pointer, a note, a card, a drawing.

Scripted interaction prototype — no AI model behind it. The hesitation signals are real; the answers are hand-written to test the interaction, not the intelligence.

§3Principles

Six rules for when to speak.

Adapted from research on mixed-initiative interfaces. Each rule is visible somewhere in the demonstration above — the readout names it as it happens.

§4Research

Every interface removed a burden. The next one removes understanding.

QUIET is the interaction prototype of a thesis on the history of human–computer interaction, and on what should come after the chat window.

Fig. 4 — A spectrum of initiative

An assistant that is always present should not always be active. For every moment QUIET picks a position on this line; the readout in §2 shows where it stands.

From §8.6The author

“The goal is not to build a smarter Clippy. It is to build a system that understands when it should behave like an assistant, when it should behave like a tool, and when it should simply stay out of the way.”

§5 Feedback

Tell us how it went.

QUIET is a research prototype, not a product. Your run through the demonstration helps answer the thesis question: when should an assistant speak — and when shouldn’t it?

Nothing recorded yet. Try the demonstration and your results will appear here.
