Reddit will cut off its RSS feeds on November 13 and end public API access by March next year. Both paths reportedly allow for large-scale data scraping and misuse, making them riskier than they're worth.

The company acknowledged in its announcement that "RSS has been a beloved part of the open web for a long time," but that's arguably an understatement. Reddit—long known as "the front page of the internet"—is oft cited as one of the last remaining mainstream bastions of the pre-AI internet, where users can find news and answers to hyperspecific questions without encountering chatbots or AI-generated summaries. For some, losing RSS feels like losing a scrap of that freedom.

It's especially bad news for those who use RSS to follow specific subreddits or search results. No direct replacement exists for those who used RSS to track communities they do not moderate, but Reddit is recommending mods try Discord Relay.

Reddit will also stop taking new requests for public API access on October 31. Developers with approved third-party apps must sign up for a limited migration by January 12, or they'll lose the API in March 2027, when public access ends. Community moderation bots can continue working through Reddit's Devvit platform, where 14,000 apps and bots have already been registered.
