Some Opensource Markdown editors don’t have a print option. I want you to sit with that for a moment. An application opens a document, renders its formatting, lets you read it, perhaps even lets you edit it. But printing that document? Apparently, we are getting ahead of ourselves. Maybe printing doesn’t fit the vision. Maybe there is a workaround involving an export, another application, and a small personal sacrifice. I don’t know. I wanted to open a file, work with it, and occasionally put it on paper. I did not expect this to become a philosophical disagreement.

I use Linux with GNOME, and there is no shortage of Markdown viewers and editors. Some are free. Some want money. Some come with subscriptions, because apparently a recurring financial relationship is now a reasonable prerequisite for working with a text file. Paying was not even my main objection. I was looking for something simple, fast, pleasant to use, and properly integrated with my desktop. A few particular features mattered to me. Nothing extraordinary. At least, I didn’t think so when I started looking.
Apostrophe looked promising because it actually belonged in the GNOME environment. That matters to me. I don’t want every application to arrive with its own interpretation of what a desktop should look like. Unfortunately, in my experience, it was slow as hell…
