Bureau of Unclassified Life
Ex tenebris, forma.
Mandate
The BUL exists to find, record and classify animals that official science says do not exist.
We work in cryptozoology, the study of animals known only from rumour, folklore, sightings nobody can repeat and remains that go missing from evidence rooms. Universities stopped funding this field long ago. We did not.
Every day the Bureau catalogues one specimen. Each one is photographed, scanned in three dimensions, measured and classified by anatomy alone. The register is published here so that the record survives, whatever happens to the people who keep it.
Aims
1. Build a complete morphological record of cryptic fauna, one specimen at a time. 2. Classify every specimen with a taxonomy that relies only on the body, never on the story told about it. 3. Keep the record public, open and impossible to quietly erase. 4. Protect our field staff, our sources and the places specimens come from.
Legal status
Most governments ban the collection, possession and study of unclassified fauna. Some cite biosecurity or public order. Most cite nothing at all. The Bureau has been declared an unlawful organisation in several jurisdictions and does not formally exist in any of them.
We do not agree with these rulings, and we keep working. Specimens are acquired, examined and moved on within days, and no specimen stays in one place for long.
Funding
The BUL takes no public money and asks no institution for anything. It runs entirely on generous private donations from patrons who share our belief that the living world is larger than the catalogue admits. Donors are never named and are never contacted after their gift. The Bureau does not sell specimens, images or data.
Facilities
The locations of our research stations are withheld. Stations move, go dark and reopen under new designations. Staff know only the station they work in. Specimens travel between sites by routes that are never written down.

Method
Each specimen gets a reference plate, a 3D scan, measurements taken from the scan and a written examination. Phylum, class and order are then read from its anatomy. See the classification key.
