Gold Steadies as Softer Inflation Cuts Fed Hike Bets
Gold held firm as softer U.S. inflation data reduced expectations for another Federal Reserve rate increase.
Spot gold traded around $4,165 per ounce, while December gold futures rose to roughly $4,202. Reuters reported that the market-implied chance of an October Fed hike fell sharply to about 31%, down from 69% a week earlier.
The shift followed cooler-than-expected inflation data. The latest U.S. PCE report showed headline inflation at 3.4% year over year in August, while core PCE—excluding food and energy—was 3.0%. On a monthly basis, headline PCE rose 0.3% and core PCE increased 0.2%.
Why It Matters for Markets
Lower expectations for further rate hikes can support gold because the metal does not pay interest. When investors expect less monetary tightening, the opportunity cost of holding gold may fall.
However, gold still faces pressure from elevated Treasury yields and a strong U.S. dollar. Reuters noted that the 10-year Treasury yield recently reached its highest level since 2002, keeping financial conditions tight despite softer inflation.
For crypto, lower rate-hike expectations can also improve risk sentiment, although Bitcoin and other digital assets remain influenced by many other factors.
