S1Okay, let's start with a question I get every year. Why are there two high tides a day, and not one?
0:07
S1The usual answer is that the Moon pulls the ocean toward it. That explains one bulge. It does not explain the second.
0:15
S1So here is the key idea. Gravity gets weaker with distance, so the Moon pulls harder on the near side of Earth than on the far side.
0:25
S1Think of three points: the ocean facing the Moon, the middle of the planet, and the ocean on the opposite side.

Slide: "A lunar day = 24 h 50 min"
Summary
Tides come in pairs because the Moon pulls the near ocean harder than the center of Earth, and the center harder than the far ocean. A lunar day lasts 24 hours 50 minutes, and the Sun strengthens or weakens the pull.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Limits, sources and what happens to your video.
How do I get a transcript of a video?
Paste the link and press Get transcript. Scribiz uses the captions when they are good and listens to the audio when they are not. Then copy the text or download SRT, VTT, TXT, Markdown or JSON.
Is it free?
You can try it without an account: 30 caption lookups and 10 Listen or Watch minutes a day. A free account gets 30 minutes a month, and a video that already has captions uses a tenth of a minute per minute of video.
Does it work without captions?
Yes. It listens to the audio and labels speakers where voices differ.
What about a video with no speech?
Choose Watch for scene notes and on-screen text. If nothing on screen is worth noting, it says so.
Can it summarize a video?
Yes. Every result has a short summary and a chapter list, and each chapter links to its time in the video.
Do you store my video?
No. Media is deleted when the job ends, and results expire after 24 hours, or 30 days with an account.
Which sites work?
YouTube, direct media links, podcast feeds and uploads work best. TikTok, X and Vimeo are best effort on the web. Instagram links usually need a login, so upload the file.
How is this different from YouTube's transcript button?
It works without captions, labels speakers and reads the screen. It also exports SRT, VTT, TXT, Markdown and JSON.
