@levelsio
In a similar scramble I did to jump on AI in late 2022 (moving from remote work and nomads to AI apps), I am now scrambling to chase any remaining moats As AI companies will suck up everything else (in my humble opinion) So for every moat left I see where I can pivot towards to that with my sites/apps Proprietary data or content: - I launched a http://nomads.com paid data API for companies from $2,490/year to $9,990/year, the city data is great because it's made by real members who for example review/like/dislike a city after visiting it, or being able to see which places are growing or shrinking (interesting of real estate, coworking, or gym investors) - http://hoodmaps.com neighborhood data is very valuable and I'm building a paid API for that too, as well as including it in the Nomads API Network effects / community: - I made the http://nomads.com community free (before $99, now just $1 to avoid spam), the more people, the more network effect Audience / distribution: you can get attention on demand - I have an @X audience and I get paid well for it (about ~$15K/mo), but I've also diversified that with my blog http://levels.io's email list and Telegram subscribers, which is now 187,279 people who get daily/weekly/monthly email digests of my posts Physical component: hardware, locations, IRL: - I have been improving and promoting http://nomads.com meetups, there's now 8 meetups planned in the next 30 days, but is has to keep growing, I've also added fitness meetups etc. - I've been using and working on http://hotelist.com a lot and improving it, it seems to fill a real void in booking sites that all suffer from rating inflation and filters that are not modern, I'm adding features I want and it seems that's working. Today I'm adding a filter for Longevity Hotels, that have a strength training gym, wellness area, blackout curtains, as a counter balance to the boomer hotels with champagne on check in and a gym with only treadmills etc. Hotelist is fundamentally IRL because hotels are IRL - Not really IRL but http://vibejam.com is an annual event that's every year has ~1000 people participating vibe coding games and this year had over 1 million people playing the games, and AI companies really like to sponsor it because it's a great way to get exposure for their AI building tools - I am building a http://pieter.com 1990s retro PC mini remake, like the SNES Mini, or the ModRetro M64, a hardware product I can sell marketed for nostalgia, especially after the last few weeks where it took off finally, I think there could be some market, and hardware is fun to try - I sell merch on http://levelsio.com and make about $1K/mo from it, I haven't been very active on it but could expand this if I want Capital: owning assets and investing - I was already heavily invested in AI companies but have been even more with the acquisition of Cursor giving me $SPCX stock, I'll hold on to that, I think money will keep getting sucked from the traditional economy and replaced with paying AI companies money - As a hedge, I've also put more money in bonds with IB01 ETF in case the AI bubble pops, $IB01 is a nice simple ETF for that - I am actively looking at buying more land and real estate (especially coastal) as that's a scarce asset that will remain scarce post-AGI - I am actively investing in startups with http://levels.vc although I'm wondering what startups are still valuable to invest in as Big AI and Big Tech suck up everything, if you look at the last YC batch, it's all "Cursor for {industry}" harnesses and hardware, I think robotics could be interesting to invest but it's unclear who will be the winner as ironically robots have a low barrier to entry. Most robots are just Chinese-made components put together with some vibe coded software by their Western founders! - I am open to buyers for http://photoai.com and http://interiorai.com to increase the amount of capital I can invest elsewhere Regulatory: licenses and legal barriers - I am bad at this, and don't like regulation by nature. So I don't have anything here. And I don't think I will try pursue anything in here. I have friends building apps that work on getting EU subsidies or EU government program credits for emissions etc. But it's not my thing So yes, chasing moats it is! Let's see if it works

Dude you have enough though, why deal with the headache and costs of physical real estate? Just put it all in stocks+crypto and chill. I exited most of my investment real estate at a relatively low net worth, held onto one property (coastal condo) and looking to offload when the

I think interior AI has a lot of potential. Building a tools around important workflows for professional is always gonna be a good idea. (architects and interior designers are underserved in AI) A simple nano banana one shot to see what my flat looks like with a blue rug

Yes I think you're right, I could build it out to more advanced than just img2gimg, the question is if I feel like it :D

Why don't you invest in food companies?

Food prices are going to $0 I think with fully automated self driving logistics and fully automated growing

You worry too much! You’ve smashed it, you’re fully hedged and set for life after all the hard work you’ve put in. Best investment I ever made was having kids. Completely changes your mindset on what really matters.

How do you manage your real-estate assets? I assume land doesnt need allot of maintenance.

Rather than invest in startups, why not invest in inputs? For example, oil, uranium, rare earth metal extraction Primary industries are probably the least flaky if AI or robots take over all work?

Amazing analysis, but I would do this: I think you should buy lots of compute, as you have the capital. One, this will reduce your cost of renting GPUs. Second, you can make money from Day 1 by renting these GPUs to others, run your own local models. Mainly helping AI achieve

one more: regulation. AI can write the payroll code, it can't become the legal employer of someone in India

Have you considered a YT channel? You know, entertainment, boosting personal brand, reaching new audiences, etc. It can fit in that direction as well.

I think it’s a great list. And a lot of truth about building resilient financial freedom. I am also thinking if I ever get more real estate it would be further up north as anything south of Switzerland will become unliveable for much of the year. So a holiday home in Scotland is

You could easily build hardware and have a huge audience to sell to Not merch though you have income there If you ever need anything ecom, glad to help

who says you need a moat, when ai becomes as capable as predicted people will make choices purely on preference, which means everybody gets a piece of the pie

If I would still care about money being in your place, I would invest in humanity: - bio/medicine/genome/age-prevention startups - government-free zones, tax-free zones, private cities (land!) - mecenating (helping cool people do cool stuff they dont do because have no money)

love that take: Most robots are just Chinese-made components put together with some vibe coded software by their Western founders!

I would probably add a few opportunities (apart from owning the AI labs stocks). Those labs don’t want to take regulatory risks. They also need capital for the massive buildout. From that, the survivors opportunities: - buying hardware/robots and/or beeing a distributor. For

I did a passion project dealing with normalizing disconnected data and I'm considering making my dataset more proprietary. Even if it's no "moat" I do believe there are lots of opportunities to disrupt this space.

the ultimate moat is being on the edge, in the last mile where AI does not have reach, you already have an audience here, you probably will have to do more like in person stuff like those you mention first, being able to congregate people is a superpower.

the retro pc mini is the sneaky good one. hardware is the one thing you can't vibe code over a weekend, and nostalgia does half the marketing. analogue sells out basically every drop on that exact idea
Dylan Heagy @dylan_heagy
I see so many people trying to vibe code software that doesn't benefit from any of these moats... often things that anyone who needed it could vibe just as easily... then wondering why they can't find traction.

Buy servers, stick them in colos, rent them out. I seriously can't buy them fast enough. Will deploy hundreds of thousands into this before the end of the year. Note: I'm super biased on this one and I already have basically unlimited pipeline of infra customers. YMMV

The last moat is being you. Pretty hard to vibe code that one

I think user-facing agents (like ChatGPT, Claude, etc) will build up their own trust layer and all the current portals that that provide reviews become less relevant. Agents will know from their user chats if a hotel/product/service was fine or not and build their own first-hand
